Plot[]
Raise The Gates![]
It's time for your 5k run to Bert Airfield. They'll be sending the transport out in an hour, maybe less. You need to get there before it leaves, or you'll have lost your chance to send Sam's package to Frances. Sam tells you to be careful - there are lots of hostiles out there today. Time to run!
Screw Loose[]
Janine interrupts Sam and the Doctor to ask you to pick up some radio parts while you're en route. Doctor Myers tells her to come back later, but Sam says you'll need to get used to being diverted like this - it's the life of an Abel Runner.
Molly[]
Becca runs alongside you for a moment. She introduces you to her daughter, and warns you about some hordes that have gathered up ahead. She wishes you luck on your run - she know how important memories of loved ones can be. A horde is on your tail now - time to run!
Chase Me![]
The zoms on your tail are too fast, and you're struggling to lose them. Becca says she has a motorbike stashed away by a nearby barn - her husband's been away hunting for a few days. She volunteers to draw the zoms away from you before escaping on her bike.
Early Flight[]
Sam comes back on the air to tell you your path has cleared - mostly. They've also had contact with Bert Airfield: the transport is taking off earlier than expected. Janine urges you on - you must get there in time. Also, there's a zombie chasing you!
Who *is* that?[]
Runner Eight interrupts Sam to marvel at your speed. Sam makes an ill-advised joke about the elderly. Runner Eight says she thinks the two of you should go out on a run at some point. Sam kicks everyone out of the comms shack.
Keep Going[]
Doctor Myers informs you you're almost at Bert Airfield. There's someone at the gate waiting for you - they're letting you in because you helped them identify Francesca before she could steal too much from them. They've even promised you a hot bath when you get there. Doctor Myers jokes that she would have run to Bert if she'd have known there was a bath at the end of it.
Run![]
You're at the gates, but the transport's getting ready to dust off. All you need to do is keep going. But Sam alerts you - there's a zom right behind you, bursting out of the trees! Run!
Delivered[]
You enter Bert and there's someone waiting there to take the package. As you deliver it, Sam breaks down with relief. The transport takes off with the package safely aboard. Sam and Doctor Myers thank you effusively. Doctor Myers says she is "proud to call you a member of Abel Township".
Over and Out[]
Janine steps into the comms booth to add her congratulations. She's very grateful for the help you've given Sam, even if she has some trouble expressing it.
Welcome to the Team[]
Runner Six hops on the comms to congratulate you, and to thank you heartily for saving her life - twice. You're already part of the team, she says. Runner Four is knitting you a special scarf, and the other Runners all have presents for you as well. Finally, she welcomes you to the team. You are an Abel Township Runner.
Transcript[]
SAM YAO: Runner Five! Runner Five, report to the main gates immediately! Uh, I mean, um, I don’t mean to be aggressive, but I really need you here right now, Runner Five. Where is Runner Five?
MAXINE MYERS: Right there. It’s okay. See? By the gates.
SAM YAO: Yes. Good, yes. Runner Five, we’ve had word from Bert Airfield. They’re sending a transport up north right now, in the next hour, maybe less! You need to get there now, or we’ll have lost our chance to send the things to Frances, and we’ll… I just, I just don’t know if I -
MAXINE MYERS: It’s okay. Runner Five will get there. It’s five kilometers. Runner Five can do it. It shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes.
SAM YAO: Okay, okay. Yes. Runner Five, ready? Raise the gates! [gate siren, gates raising] Covering fire! [gunshots] There are a lot of hostiles out there today, Five. Run. I mean it. Run!
SAM YAO: That’s great. You’re doing well. Right on track to make Bert Airfield well in time.
[knock on comms shack door]
MAXINE MYERS: Not now! Come back in an hour.
[door opens]
JANINE DE LUCA: I’m sorry, it can’t wait. Oh, is that Runner Five out there? Even better. Runner Five, if you divert just towards the old transmitter station, you could pick up some radio parts -
MAXINE MYERS: Janine, this is not the time! Remember how we talked about how Runner Five was helping Sam?
SAM YAO: Hello, still in the room.
JANINE DE LUCA: Oh, this is the mission to - to stop you going -
SAM YAO: Yeah, yeah, you know, there’s something about your refreshing honesty I can’t help liking, Janine.
JANINE DE LUCA: Enough of that, Mister Yao. I’m not here for the radio parts, anyway. Not that it wouldn’t help if you could pick some up. There’s a very urgent repair I have to make to the transmitter array. It’ll just take a few minutes.
MAXINE MYERS: Yeah, but we’re in the middle of -!
SAM YAO: Nah, this is how it goes. Runner Five’ll get used to it. Okay, Five, cutting comms now. Back in a few.

BECCA: Hey, Abel Township runner! Good to see you again. It’s me, Becca! This is my daughter. Wow, you’ve got faster. Look at you go! Bet Abel Township are pleased with you.
Heard from Bert Airfield that you’d be coming over this way. Thought I’d look out for you. There are some pretty nasty hordes up the way you’re heading, and I thought maybe I could, well, you know. Better if we all look out for each other, isn’t it? That’s what being human means. It can’t just be me and my little family.
I respect what you’re doing, too. My photos of my old pals are all I’ve got left of them. I’d be devastated to lose them. All that stuff means something.
Uh, I don’t want to scare you, pet, but one of those hordes I mentioned is on our tail now. Come on, run!
BECCA: These ones are fast, aren’t they? Not the fastest I’ve seen, but still pretty… getting pretty close. I always wonder what makes some of them fast and some slow. It’s as if there are tides of fast ones, you know. They’re like weather.
My husband’s been out for a couple of days hunting for pigeons. [sighs] I worry about that man sometimes.
Listen, we’ve got a motorbike stashed over in that barn. How about if I get these zoms to chase me, and I’ll get on my bike, draw them away from you? That way you can carry straight on to Bert Airfield. Sound like a plan? Okay, you keep going but stay quiet. I’ll make noise to attract them.
Come on after me, you pasty, flaky-skinned shamblers! Didn’t moisturize last night, did you? And look at your nails! Half of you haven’t even got any hands anymore! Bet you’d love to get a taste of me, though, wouldn’t you? Nice, juicy flesh! Well, you won’t get it. Still, chase after me! Come on, chase me! Come on!
Good luck on your run, Runner Five!

SAM YAO: And we’re back on the air. Wow, you’ve gone a long way, Runner Five. And the area seems clear of zombies. Well, mostly clear. Listen, we’ve um… how did you do this exactly, Janine?
JANINE DE LUCA: I could try to explain, but it would waste time, and you wouldn’t understand it anyway.
SAM YAO: Again - crisp, clear, and to the point. So basically, we’ve had communications with Bert Airfield, and they’re sending that air transport to the north earlier than we thought. They’re worried about weather or something. I mean, if you can’t make it, it’s totally -
JANINE DE LUCA: You only have another few minutes to get there to be sure to make the safe window, Runner Five. Do keep the pace up. Oh, and I believe a zombie is chasing you.
SAM YAO: You might want to work on your “breaking news gently” technique, Janine. Mm, she’s not wrong, though. Run!
SARA SMITH: Wow, who is that running out there? They’re going well.
SAM YAO: Uh, sorry, sorry. Has my comms shack become some kind of local meeting place now? Oh, are we having knitting clubs here? Over 65’s tea dances?
JANINE DE LUCA: Mister Yao, you know how few of the elderly made it through.
SAM YAO: Yeah, sorry. I, uh… no, wait, not sorry. Runner Eight, this station is far too crowded for you to be in here. Can you please -
SARA SMITH: Is that Runner Five?
JANINE DE LUCA: Indeed.
SARA SMITH: Runner Five got fast, eh?
JANINE DE LUCA: Indeed.
SARA SMITH: Guess we should go out running together sometime soon, then. Maybe back to that chopper they came down in.
JANINE DE LUCA: An excellent idea. We’ll leave you now, Mister Yao, if you’ll excuse us.
SAM YAO: If I’ll –? I was the one asking you to get out of my -! [sighs] Well, that’s got rid of them, anyway. The Doc should be back soon, too. You’re so nearly at Bert Airfield, Runner Five. You’re just – you’re doing amazingly. Please keep going. Please.
MAXINE MYERS: Runner Five, I am so proud of you. You’re so nearly there!
SAM YAO: We’ve got you on the scanners. Just another few minutes until you get to the airfield.
MAXINE MYERS: From the scanners, looks like there’s someone waiting for you at the gate.
SAM YAO: Yeah. They’re relaxing their rules for you because we helped them identify Francesca as the thief. They’ve even promised me there’ll be a hot bath waiting for you in their base.
MAXINE MYERS: Bath? You mean a shower.
SAM YAO: A bath, Maxine! Runner Five is getting a bath!
MAXINE MYERS: Oh, well, if I’d known there was a bath in it, and if the Major would let me off the damn base, I would have run it myself!
SAM YAO: I know you would.
MAXINE MYERS: Just keep going, Five. You’re so nearly there.
SAM YAO: There, there! Runner Five is nearly at the gate. Looks like the transport’s getting ready to go. Come on, Five, you can do it!
MAXINE MYERS: You’ve come such a long way, Runner Five, just keep going! You’ll do the handover in time.
SAM YAO: Wait, there’s a - where did that come from?
MAXINE MYERS: It must have been screened from the scanners by those trees. There’s a zom right behind you, Five. Don’t look back, just run!
SAM YAO: Runner Five, head towards the open gate. It’s just to your left.
MAXINE MYERS: The woman’s waiting there for your package. She’ll run it to the chopper.
SAM YAO: Oh man, I’m just -
MAXINE MYERS: It’s okay, it’s okay. Look, Runner Five’s giving the package over to her.
SAM YAO: She’s running it to the chopper. And there it goes. They were just waiting for us. For Runner Five.
MAXINE MYERS: It’s going to Frances, Sam. It’s going to Alice’s sister, where it belongs.
SAM YAO: And all thanks to Runner Five, eh, and that heroic run. I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done today, Five. You’re already a hero to me.
MAXINE MYERS: To all of us. We are so proud of what you’ve accomplished in these past eight weeks. So proud to call you a member of Abel Township.
JANINE DE LUCA: Runner Five? It’s me, Janine. Mister Yao and Doctor Myers have had to step out of the room for a moment, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to add my own hearty congratulations to you for the very hard work you’ve put in over the past two months.
I’m aware that I might seem… frosty, at times, but this exterior does conceal the fact that I have genuine feelings of concern for various members of the base who, at certain times, may find themselves in emotional or psychological difficulties, and I…
Runner Five, I’m grateful for what you’ve done for Sam. He needed someone to rely on. All the other runners are being used for operational reasons. It was your very trainee status that made you the only one who could help. Thank you. And, um… yes. Over and out.
MAGGIE DOANE: Hey, buddy, it’s Six here. Just thought I’d check in and bring you a message from all the others runners. We’re so glad you’re going to be joining us on active duty. And me especially, of course, since you saved my life not once, but twice. We’re a tight team, you know. We look after each other. And you’ve shown you’re already part of the team even before you finished training.
So Runner Four’s knitted you some special scarf, I think. Runner Twelve’s promised to produce an extra taco for you next time he makes them. Runner Thirteen’s rustled you up some honey from somewhere. And I think Runner Ten wants to use you for some more experiments. Uh, don’t let him send you through a field of zombies wearing a blindfold, okay? He did that to me, once. [shudders]
I guess we don’t know what your special skill is, but whatever you bring to the mix, we’re glad to have you. Welcome to the team.
