Plot[]
Start Now[]
Doctor Myers says that, given this is your last training run, you'll be on a different training schedule to last time. She'll also be coming out with you to make sure you're ready for your final run to Bert Airfield.
A Good Thing[]
Doctor Myers thanks you for what you're doing for Sam. She says she thinks its him that holds Abel together more than anyone else. She says what happened to the old Runner Five hit him hard and you have really helped him recover.
Word of Warning[]
Doctor Myers warns you: she believes something's going on at Abel. There are too many people interested in the settlement, and too much has happened recently. She says you should be on your guard.
Not Glamorous[]
The Doctor gives you a stick of no-chafe to protect you from chafing on your big run at the end of the week.
Transcript[]
MAXINE MYERS: Just one more training session to go before you do that big run to Bert Airfield, Runner Five, so we’re mixing things up, and your training today will be different to yesterday. We’ll start with a five-minute warm-up walk, and I’ll be coming out with you today, too. I want to make sure you’re ready, and it’ll give us a chance to talk. Start walking now.
MAXINE MYERS: You know, it’s a great thing you’re doing for Sam. That guy, he’s uh… [laughs] I mean, I know he’s a doofus, and he’s no expert, but I feel like he sort of… holds this place together somehow. More than the Major, more than Runner Seven.
I don’t think he even knows how much he does. I mean, you know he basically never leaves that comms desk unless he’s asleep, right? He’s probably saved the life of every runner on this base at least once! And this Runner Five thing… the old Runner Five? That hit him hard.
Alice… well, uh, she was a management consultant back in the day, high-powered. She and Sam would never have met, not before the apocalypse. She could be kind of private, but I know he meant a lot to her. He means a lot to all of us.
I didn’t say it, but there was a time I was worried that this thing would break him. Alice’s death. Everyone has someone, you know, that they can just keep going for. Someone or something. I got my… my patients. Janine has her house. Runner Seven’s got that dog, Bonnie! You’ve probably seen her around Abel. Alice had her dream of finding Frances, her sister, again, and Sam had Alice. And now he’s got Alice’s dream to fulfill. It’s… it’s a good thing you’re doing, Five.
MAXINE MYERS: Okay, that’s good! Now we’re going to go straight into a 10-minute free-form run. You can walk if you need to but run as much as you’re able.
MAXINE MYERS: Great! Two minutes done.
MAXINE MYERS: Four minutes gone, Runner Five. Imagine those zoms are right behind you. [imitates zombie groan] They probably will be, come your run to Bert.
MAXINE MYERS: You’ve been running for six minutes. You’re going strong, Runner Five.
MAXINE MYERS: Only two minutes left, Runner Five.
MAXINE MYERS: Just one minute to go! Keep going and finish strong!
MAXINE MYERS: That’s 10 minutes, Runner Five! Great run! Now take a rest and stretch out for three minutes.
MAXINE MYERS: After this, you’ll be a real runner, you know. Missions to take on. People in Abel will be relying on you. Abel’s… it’s like everywhere after the apocalypse. No one really knows where anyone comes from, who anyone was. No one really cares. As long as you do your work and don’t take up too many supplies, you’re welcome here.
But I guess I just… [sighs] Look. Because you’re helping Sam, word of warning: I hear things. People never seem to notice a doctor, you know? Like we’re furniture in the hospital. It’s always been like that, just melted into the background, and people feel they can say anything in front of you.
So just… word of warning? Something’s going on here. There are one too many people overly interested in Abel. The rocket launcher, the feud with New Canton, even Francesca. It’s like people are gunning for us! Watch your back, that’s all I’m saying.
MAXINE MYERS: Okay, time’s up on that stretching, Runner Five. Now let’s see how far you’ve come. You’re going to run for 10 minutes, then walk for five, then run for another 10 minutes.
MAXINE MYERS: Two minutes, Runner Five. This is what you’ve been training for.
MAXINE MYERS: That’s four minutes down, Runner Five. Abel is proud of you! You’re one of our heroes.
MAXINE MYERS: Six minutes, Runner Five. Run strong.
MAXINE MYERS: Just two minutes left, Runner Five. Keep going.
MAXINE MYERS: That’s 10 minutes. Now slow down to a walk.
MAXINE MYERS: Great! Now speed up again into your second 10-minute run. Go!
MAXINE MYERS: That’s two minutes. You’re covering some distance.
MAXINE MYERS: Four minutes. Don’t push to go too fast, just keep going.
MAXINE MYERS: Six minutes done. Keep running steadily as if your life depended on it because all our lives do.
MAXINE MYERS: Just two minutes to go. Keep running!
MAXINE MYERS: That’s great, Runner Five! Excellent work! Now we’re going to take another five-minute recovery walk before our final five-minute run, so just keep walking. I’ll tell you when to run again.
MAXINE MYERS: Great work, Runner Five. Speed up now into a medium-paced run. Take it easy. Pick a pace where you feel you can easily do five minutes, and… go!
MAXINE MYERS: That’s two minutes. You’re going strong.
MAXINE MYERS: Four minutes. Just 60 more seconds to go and you’re done for today.
MAXINE MYERS: And you’re done! Take some time now to cool down, get your breath back, and stretch out your muscles. You’re looking great out here today, Runner Five! Abel Township is proud of you, and… I’m proud of you, too! You’ve come a long way in a short time. We need more like you.
Here. Yeah, I know this isn’t glamorous, but you might make use of it in a couple of days when you head off to Bert. We’re planning the run to Bert Airfield in three days’ time, Runner Five, so take tomorrow and the next day off, then report back here as early as you can in the day, and we’ll get going. You’re… you’re one of the good ones, Runner Five.
