Plot[]

Leave No-One Behind[]

Doctor Myers calls you to the gates for an urgent assignment. Runner Six has been injured in the field and there are some zombies blocking the shortest route home. There are no other runners available, so you'll need to strap on a noisemaker and head out into the field to distract the zoms and let Runner Six get home safely.

Fractured Hip[]

Sam receives a message from Cameo Wood - Runner 13. Runner Six is getting worse - she's got a deep laceration on her leg and is bleeding heavily. You'll need to get the zoms to follow you as quickly as possible.

Coming For You[]

The zombies are coming for you! Sam understands this may not feel like great news, but assures you that it's going to save Runner 6's life.

Fast As You Can[]

You've drawn the zombies far enough away from Runner Six's route home, so Doctor Myers tells you to turn off your noisemaker and run home.

Red Scarf[]

Sam welcomes you home and congratulates you on saving Runner Six's life. Runner 7, the head of Abel's Runners, awards you with a Red Scarf - the symbol of a Runner who has saved another's life.

[intercom horn]

MAXINE MYERS: Runner Five? Runner Five, report to the gates. Immediately! Runner Five!

SAM YAO: It’s okay, it’s okay. Look, Runner Five’s there, all ready to go.

[gate siren, gates raising]

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, good. Any word from Runner Six?

SAM YAO: They’re bringing her in. It’s okay, not a bite. We can fix anything but a bite, right?

MAXINE MYERS: Well, we can fix most things. Not everything. We need to get her in quickly. How many are there?

SAM YAO: Three. Three zoms in the path of the most direct route.

MAXINE MYERS: And there’s no one else?

SAM YAO: Runners Twelve, Thirteen, and Twenty are helping Runner Six. Five… no, six others are invalided out. Seven more are away on supply missions. We’ve been so stretched! Runner Seventeen just got in from a 36-hour mission, and we can’t ask her to go out again so soon.

MAXINE MYERS: No, we can’t. No one else, then?

SAM YAO: We always have two runners here in case our comms go down in an attack on the base. Only way to find the other guys and warn them.

MAXINE MYERS: So it’s you, Runner Five.

SAM YAO: You’ll be fine.

MAXINE MYERS: Don’t panic!

SAM YAO: We’re going to send you into the path of those three zoms with a noisemaker.

MAXINE MYERS: And you’re going to get them to chase you so that those runners can bring Runner Six into the hospital as quickly as possible. It’ll be okay. You’ll still be doing your training. We’ll tell you where to go.

SAM YAO: We’ll keep you safe, Runner Five. I’ll be watching. Now start walking. You’re heading for the zoms.

SAM YAO: Great! Two minutes walk done, and you’re going well.

MAXINE MYERS: One more minute of walking. You’re heading right towards the zoms; that’s good.

MAXINE MYERS: Good! We’re doing a five-minute free-form run. That’s going to take you close to the zombies. When you’re close but not too close, you’ll turn on the noisemaker and you’ll get them to follow you. Start your five-minute free-form run now.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s good! Three minutes done. Can you see the zoms in the distance now?

MAXINE MYERS: Good work! You’re getting close. One minute to go.

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, turn your noisemaker on. [noisemaker rings] Good. Stand there and wait for them to start following you. Might as well do your 10 knee lifts now.

MAXINE MYERS: Mm… they don’t seem to be picking up that you’re there. Walk a little towards them, slowly.

MAXINE MYERS: Still nothing? Speed up. Walk towards them.

MAXINE MYERS: Hmm… did that one just turn its head?

SAM YAO: Mm, maybe. Stand where you are for a moment, Five.

MAXINE MYERS: Do those 10 knee lifts while you’re waiting.

MAXINE MYERS: No, they still haven’t picked you up. Walk slowly nearer to them. We want you to be careful. Make sure you don’t get any closer than you absolutely need to.

SAM YAO: Message from Runner Thirteen. Cameo says Runner Six is getting worse. She’s got a deep laceration on her leg. It’s bleeding a lot. We need to get those zoms following Runner Five now. Walk faster toward the zoms, Five.

MAXINE MYERS: There. There! One turned towards you, I’m certain of it. Stop right there, Five. Do your 10 knee lifts and wait for them to get your scent, or whatever it is that zombies get.

MAXINE MYERS: Good. They’ve turned towards you. Walk slowly away from them. They need to still be able to see you.

MAXINE MYERS: Great! They’re coming after you. Speed up to a fast walk.

SAM YAO: This may not feel like great news, Five, but you’re saving Runner Six’s life right now. The zombies are coming for you.

MAXINE MYERS: You’ve got a little too far ahead of them now, Five. Stop where you are and do your knee lifts. See if that attracts them.

MAXINE MYERS: Ah, Runner Ten was right, they do hate seeing knee lifts!

SAM YAO: Runner Ten said that? Man, that guy’s my hero.

MAXINE MYERS: Walk slowly away from them, Five. They’re back on your tail.

MAXINE MYERS: Now walk faster. One minute fast walking. Put some more open space between you and the zoms.

SAM YAO: These must be the easiest distracted zoms in the world! They’re turning back towards the path.

MAXINE MYERS: It is possible they can smell Runner Six’s blood if she’s bleeding heavily.

SAM YAO: They… do that?

MAXINE MYERS: We don’t know, Sam. Maybe. Do your final 10 knee lifts, Runner Five. That should get their attention.

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, they’re back. Walk slowly away from them.

MAXINE MYERS: Now walk fast. They’re behind you.

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, good. They’re closing in.

SAM YAO: That’s not good. That’s bad, Maxine.

MAXINE MYERS: It’s good news for Runner Six, and Five can stay ahead of them. Just do 30 seconds of slow running now.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s great. Your pace is looking good to keep away from the zoms. Slow down to a walk.

MAXINE MYERS: Good. Now to keep you safe from them, 30 seconds of slow running.

MAXINE MYERS: Runner Six is going through the danger zone now. You’re keeping her safe. Slow down to a walk to let the zoms catch up a bit.

MAXINE MYERS: Good! Now speed up to a run.

MAXINE MYERS: Now walk. You’re okay, there’s distance between you.

MAXINE MYERS: Another run. Keep going! They’re chasing you!

MAXINE MYERS: Great work! Slow down to a walk. Runner Six is past danger now. Just one more chase before you can turn off that noisemaker.

MAXINE MYERS: One more run. Go!

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, good! You can turn off your noisemaker now. You’ve been a hero here today, Runner Five. Now just come on back home as fast as you can. The zombies might follow you, but you’ll be able to outpace them if you keep up a good speed. Should take you about 15 minutes. Walk or run, just make sure you keep going as fast as you can.

MAXINE MYERS: You’ve been going for two minutes now, Five. You’re leaving them behind.

MAXINE MYERS: Four minutes done. Keep on going, Five. They’re still on your tail, but they’re further behind.

MAXINE MYERS: Five minutes done. You’re going strong.

SAM YAO: That’s seven and a half minutes now. You’re losing those zoms. The Doc’s had to head off to the hospital because they’ve brought Runner Six in. She’s in bad shape, but thanks to you, the Doc thinks she’s got to her in time.

SAM YAO: You’ve been going for nine minutes. You’re getting closer to Abel and leaving those zoms behind. Just keep going.

SAM YAO: It’s been 12 minutes. Keep going, Five!

SAM YAO: You’re nearly back at Abel! Maybe 90 seconds away at that pace. Come on home, Five. Come on home.

[gate siren, gates raising]

SAM YAO: Welcome home, Runner Five. You’re amazing! You saved a life today. The Doc’s down in the hospital, trying to sew Runner Six up, but someone here wants to talk to you.

EVAN DEAUBL: Runner Five? Runner Seven, head of runners. I have something for you, in honor of your bravery today. It’s not much, but only a runner who’s saved the life of another runner is given one of these.

Well done. We’re proud of you. You’ve done well, Runner Five. We’re proud to have you on the team. Take a day off, then come back for more training. We need you as strong and fast as you can be.

Hey Five,

What you did today took nerves of steel - even seasoned runners hate using those noisemakers. I mean, it does go against every runner's instinct of you know, running away from the zoms, rather than getting them to run towards you...

We're all really impressed - and it takes a lot to impress Runner 7! I think that earns you some downtime in the rec room. Start getting to know your fellow runners - it won't be long until you're out on the field with them!

- Sam

P.S. Runner 6 asked me to pass on her thanks - she wouldn't've made it without you, and wants to meet you soon.
