Plot[]
Completely Secure[]
Runner 10 asks you to assist in his research while you're training today. He's chained a captured zombie in a nearby field and wants you to help him test how close you need to be before "she" notices you. Doctor Myers is skeptical of the test's safety, but Runner 10 reassures her that it's perfectly safe.
Shuffle Rage![]
Runner 10 notices that your knee-lift exercises seem to be enraging the chained zombie. Doctor Myers tells you to run away for safety.
A Little Closer...[]
Runner 10 asks you to do your next set of knee lifts closer to the zombie. He's very interested in how she's responding to your movements. The Doctor agrees that you could get a little closer, but tells you to run for now.
For Science[]
Runner 10 asks you to walk back towards the zombie. He convinces Doctor Myers by insisting that this is the kind of research that saves lives.
Try Running![]
Runner 10 confirms that it's the knee-lifts that enrage the zombie. He suggests running next, to see how she responds. Doctor Myers agrees with this suggestion in characteristic manner.
Carry On![]
The zombie begins trying to to work her chains out of the ground.
Better Safe Than Sorry[]
Runner 10 is amazed by the zombie's mobility - she's almost managed to work the stake out of the ground. He's certain she will be loose soon, and advises you to get out of the field as quickly as possible.
Keep Moving[]
The zombie manages to escape her bonds. Keep moving!
Stretch Out[]
You manage to exit the field by a gate, which Doctor Myers tells you to close behind you quickly. She reassures you that the zombie won't be escaping, so you have some time to rest and stretch out.
Get Moving Again[]
The zombie's rattling on the gate, so Doctor Myers advises you to move on quickly into your final free-form run.
Valuable Research[]
Doctor Myers reprimands Runner 10 for putting you in danger. He insists it was valuable research and gives you a notebook and some pencils as a thank-you.
Transcript[]
MAXINE MYERS: And what is it you need Runner Five to do in that far field?
CHRIS MCSHELL: Oh, it’s just um, it’s just a few measurements. Nothing too taxing. Sam’s not here, is he?
MAXINE MYERS: No, he’s still resting.
CHRIS MCSHELL: Oh. He’s always very, uh, effusive.
MAXINE MYERS: He tried to come back earlier in the week, but he’s still getting the, uh, flashbacks.
CHRIS MCSHELL: The only thing is to throw yourself into your work. That’s what I’ve done. We all have someone to forget. Something. Someone. But onwards! Onwards. Runner Five, I just need you to run some tests for me today. [laughs] “Run.” That’s quite funny.
MAXINE MYERS: Yeah, quite.
CHRIS MCSHELL: You can do your usual program with the doctor. There’ll just be a – well, you see that tethered zom in the middle of the field? Oh, you’re quite safe, completely safe. I just want to see how far away you are when she notices you, and how strongly she tries to get at you despite her chains.
MAXINE MYERS: Those chains are secure, are they?
CHRIS MCSHELL: Oh, completely! Yeah, yeah, you don’t need to worry about that. Just get on and do your training. I’ll just be making notes.
MAXINE MYERS: Okay, Runner Five, we’re going to start with a five-minute walk.
MAXINE MYERS: That’s two minutes. You’re doing great!
MAXINE MYERS: Just one more minute to go.
MAXINE MYERS: Great! Now, like last time, we’re going to go straight into a five-minute free-form run. Remember to walk or run as much as feels right to your body.
CHRIS MCSHELL: Oh, and you’ll be going straight past that zom, so uh, well, you know, don’t come within biting range.
MAXINE MYERS: Great! Keep that up. Three minutes left.
MAXINE MYERS: Just one more minute now.
MAXINE MYERS: And that’s five minutes. Now we’re going to do the same drills as last time. You’ll be running for 1 minute, walking for 1 minute, and then stopping to do 10 knee lifts.
MAXINE MYERS: Let’s get started. Run now at a pace that feels comfortable to you.
MAXINE MYERS: That’s 15 seconds, Five.
MAXINE MYERS: Halfway finished.
MAXINE MYERS: Only 15 seconds to go. Keep it up!
MAXINE MYERS: And now walk.
MAXINE MYERS: Okay, time for those 10 knee lifts.
CHRIS MCSHELL: Huh, interesting. Look at that. Doctor, what do you make of that?
MAXINE MYERS: I, um… we’re sure that’s safe?
CHRIS MCSHELL: The knee lifts seem to be enraging the zombie. How fascinating! Is it because their vestigial brain knows that they’re incapable of such movements themselves? Shuffle rage? Carry on, Runner Five.
MAXINE MYERS: No. Move on to the next exercise. Run, now, away from that chained zombie! Run!
MAXINE MYERS: 15 seconds done. That’s great!
MAXINE MYERS: Only 30 seconds to go.
MAXINE MYERS: That’s great, Five! 45 seconds done.
MAXINE MYERS: Now walk. You’re doing well, Five.
MAXINE MYERS: Okay, let’s do those 10 knee lifts.
CHRIS MCSHELL: I don’t suppose you could…
MAXINE MYERS: What?
CHRIS MCSHELL: It’d be very helpful for my research if Runner Five could just do those knee exercises closer to the zombie next time. The response was very… interesting.
MAXINE MYERS: Is that chain secure? Are you certain?
CHRIS MCSHELL: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I bagged the zom and nailed the stake into the ground myself. She’s not going anywhere.
MAXINE MYERS: Mm… you could come in a little closer next time, Five, but now, another minute’s run. Go.
MAXINE MYERS: You’re going well. 15 seconds gone.
MAXINE MYERS: You’re doing great. You’re halfway through.
MAXINE MYERS: You’re running well! Just 15 more seconds.
MAXINE MYERS: Now walk for one minute and get your breath back.
CHRIS MCSHELL: Walk back towards the zombie. Please?
MAXINE MYERS: If you’re certain.
CHRIS MCSHELL: This is the kind of research that saves lives. Imagine if we know what kind of motions most attract zombies!
MAXINE MYERS: Well, as long as we’re doing science, here…
MAXINE MYERS: Time for those 10 knee lifts! Be careful.
[zombie groans]
CHRIS MCSHELL: Yes! It’s certainly the knee exercises. Try running after this, Runner Five, to see how she responds.
MAXINE MYERS: Oh yeah? Why don’t you try running, Five? Fortunately, it’s time for your run. Go.
MAXINE MYERS: Steady pace. 15 seconds completed, Five.
MAXINE MYERS: Good running, Five! 30 seconds left.
MAXINE MYERS: Nearly there. Just 15 more seconds.
MAXINE MYERS: Okay, now it’s time to walk.
CHRIS MCSHELL: Curious. Nothing at all from the running.
MAXINE MYERS: Now some more knee lifts.
[zombie groans, chains rattle]
CHRIS MCSHELL: Astonishing! She’s trying to work the stake out of the ground. I’ve never seen a zom work so hard to -
MAXINE MYERS: Runner Ten!
CHRIS MCSHELL: Carry on. I’m sure it’ll be fine.
MAXINE MYERS: Time to get further away, Five. Run!
MAXINE MYERS: Well done, Five. That’s 15 seconds gone.
MAXINE MYERS: Halfway there.
MAXINE MYERS: Keep it up, Five! 15 more seconds to go.
MAXINE MYERS: Okay, stop now and walk for a minute.
MAXINE MYERS: I hesitate to say this, Five, but it’s time for your final set of… knee lifts.
[zombie groans]
CHRIS MCSHELL: She really has almost got that stake out of the ground. It’s amazing! Quite amazing. I must write this up. “Knee… motions…”
MAXINE MYERS: She’s going to -!
CHRIS MCSHELL: Oh yes, I’d say she’s definitely going to get loose. Incredible! Probably time for Runner Five to get out of that field, wouldn’t you say? It’s just a shambler, but uh, better safe than sorry.
MAXINE MYERS: I - it’s a good thing it’s time for a free-form run. I’ll time you for your first eight minutes. That should keep you well ahead of that zom, as long as you keep up a good pace. So, first free-form run. Go.
MAXINE MYERS: You’re doing well. You’ve done two minutes. That zom’s not free yet, but she will be soon.
MAXINE MYERS: Halfway there. Four minutes to go. Keep going.
MAXINE MYERS: Oh God. There! She’s free. She’s after you. Keep moving!
MAXINE MYERS: Just two minutes to go now, and you’ll be past the big fence. That’ll keep her away, and you’re doing great, Runner Five.
MAXINE MYERS: Okay, pull that gate shut, and that’s your first free-form run done. Stop for two minutes now. Stretch out. The zom won’t be making it through that gate. You’re okay.
[gate rattles]
MAXINE MYERS: Still better to be safe than sorry, Five. Time to keep moving again. She’s rattling on that gate. It won’t hold forever.
MAXINE MYERS: Two minutes down. You’re doing well. The zom’s trying to come through the hedge, but you’re still outpacing it.
MAXINE MYERS: Four minutes done. You’re doing great. That zom’s still on your tail, but when you’re closer to Abel, we’ll get her with a headshot.
MAXINE MYERS: Just two more minutes. Come on, she’s still behind you!
[gunshot]
MAXINE MYERS: Oh, thank God! Runner Ten, how could you put Runner Five in such danger on a training mission? It was just irresponsible and -!
CHRIS MCSHELL: It’s very valuable research, Doctor! Oh, and I have a little gift for Five. To say thank you.
MAXINE MYERS: Runner Five, that was amazing work out there today. I am so sorry you ended up at risk. Take a couple of days off now, and we’ll resume your training when you’re ready.
[gate siren, gates raising]
