Stoop-and-grab[]

Despite Doctor Myers' objections, Janine asks you to collect litter while you're out training. She reminds you of the correct movement for picking things up while maintaining momentum. This will be a useful skill once you become a full runner.

And My Axe![]

You get back to Abel ahead of the zoms which began chasing you while you were training. Janine, shocked that you were unarmed in the wild, gives you her axe as a reward.

Transcript[]

JANINE DE LUCA: I know it’s not glamorous -

MAXINE MYERS: It’s not about the glamor. Runner Five is supposed to be out there training.

JANINE DE LUCA: Well, how difficult can it be? Run a bit, pick up litter a bit. It’s good practice for picking up supplies. Runner Five’s got a backpack.

MAXINE MYERS: I suppose everyone does have to pull their weight…

JANINE DE LUCA: You know that motion does need some practice. How does it go? “Stoop and grab, but don’t slow”? It’s a good idea to practice it.

MAXINE MYERS: Hmm…

JANINE DE LUCA: And just look at the place! It’s a security risk. All those papers and litter could easily conceal a crawler.

MAXINE MYERS: A small crawler.

JANINE DE LUCA: Even those exist.

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, Five, we’ve got a new assignment for you. I’m sorry it’s not the most exciting thing in the world, but while you’re training today, we’d like you to make a wide circle of Abel, picking up trash.

JANINE DE LUCA: And anything else you find.

MAXINE MYERS: You can see for yourself it’s a mess out there. I suggest you head directly away from Abel to get all the trash on the road in. All right, 10-minute brisk walk starts now.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s three minutes, Runner Five. You’re doing well. I can see you’re getting quite a haul of trash, there.

MAXINE MYERS: Five minutes. You’re halfway. Liking your “stoop and grab” motion.

MAXINE MYERS: Eight minutes done. Nearly there. And we’re grateful for your time picking up that trash.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s your 10 minutes. Now I’m going to give you the walk/run drills. Don’t try to pick up trash now, just focus on your form. You’re going to be running for 30 seconds and then walking for 1 minute, five times. After each run, you’ll do five heel lifts.

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, run! Slow run, remember?

MAXINE MYERS: Just 10 more seconds of running.

MAXINE MYERS: Now stop running and do five heel lifts. Remember, stand where you are, both feet on the ground, and raise yourself up onto your toes, taking your heels off the ground, then come back down under control. Do that five times and then walk until I tell you.

MAXINE MYERS: Time for another quick run! Run.

MAXINE MYERS: Only 10 seconds of running left.

MAXINE MYERS: Now do your five heel lifts and then walk to get your breath back.

MAXINE MYERS: More running. You can do it!

MAXINE MYERS: Only 10 seconds of running to go.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s great! Stop running, do those five heel lifts, and then walk.

MAXINE MYERS: Time for another quick run! Go.

MAXINE MYERS: Nearly there! Just 10 more seconds.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s good work, Runner Five! Now raise up onto your toes for those five heel lifts, and then walk.

MAXINE MYERS: Nearly there. Run!

MAXINE MYERS: Only 10 seconds until you’re done with running drills.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s excellent work, Runner Five. Do your five heel lifts now, and then walk.

MAXINE MYERS: Now it’s time for your 10-minute free-form run. Again, it’s up to you how much you walk or run. You can walk it all, run it all, or swap between walking and running, and maybe even pick up a bit more trash as you -

JANINE DE LUCA: What?

MAXINE MYERS: Are those -?

JANINE DE LUCA: They’re far away. They can’t reach Runner Five in time.

MAXINE MYERS: Still. Runner Five, come back home as quickly as you can.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s great. You’ve done three minutes.

JANINE DE LUCA: And those zombies are-?

MAXINE MYERS: Getting closer, yeah.

JANINE DE LUCA: And Runner Five is -

MAXINE MYERS: Runner Five will be just fine. All we need is a steady pace, Five. You’re doing great.

MAXINE MYERS: Halfway there. Five minutes to go.

JANINE DE LUCA: Don’t look back, Five. They’re gaining on you.

MAXINE MYERS: Don’t try to scare Runner Five!

JANINE DE LUCA: It’s not me Runner Five should be scared of.

MAXINE MYERS: Just two minutes to go, now. Keep going. You’re within reach of Abel.

JANINE DE LUCA: We’re sure Runner Five’s going to make it?

MAXINE MYERS: If there’s any doubt, the sniper on the roof will pick them off.

JANINE DE LUCA: Isn’t Runner Five armed?

MAXINE MYERS: Not on a training run, no.

JANINE DE LUCA: Not even with something to throw to distract it?

MAXINE MYERS: We like to send trainee runners out without weighing them down.

JANINE DE LUCA: Hmm. Keep up the pace there, Five.

MAXINE MYERS: Raise the gates! [gate siren, gates raising] Runner Five, great run! Cool down now, and stretch out your muscles. [laughs] And you outpaced those zoms!

JANINE DE LUCA: Not by enough.

MAXINE MYERS: Runner Five’s just starting out. It’s not fair to have a g-

JANINE DE LUCA: Take my axe, Five. Just in case.

MAXINE MYERS: Oh, okay. Well, I guess that works. Congratulations, Five. You’ve completed your second week of training. Take a day or two off, now, and we’ll start on a brand new workout.

Letters[]

You've had quite the week, Five! With Rajit showing you that...thing he can do with his foot, and the zombies today, and, of course, Sam.

But you didn't let any of that distract you! I'm very happy with how you're coming along.

I did ask Janine to write you an apology, but...this is the best you can hope for out of Janine, I think.

- Dr Maxine Myers

Five,

I understand that Dr Myers thinks it was unreasonable of me to ask a runner-in-training to undertake tasks outside of Abel. But, in my opinion, it's paramount that you rapidly learn the terrain around our base of operations, and that we put you to the test with real zombies.

It's all well and good to say you're showing promise when you're doing laps of the canteen, but that doesn't tell us how you'll do when the adrenaline and fear kick in.

All in all, I think you did rather well considering, but do keep up with your training, Five.

Janine de Luca
