Heading Out[]
Janine interrupts the Doctor's briefing with an urgent request. There's been a supply drop in the wilderness containing an assault rifle with seven clips of ammo. With all the other runners out of action, she needs you to retrieve it.
Blood?[]
As thanks for your services in the field today, Janine gifts you with a jewel-encrusted dagger and a rare compliment.

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, Runner Five, this is the last of your Week One workouts. You’ll be moving on in the next workout, so give this one all you’ve got. Remember how we start? Just a 10-minute walk. Walk briskly, and – [knock on door] I am training a runner! Come back in 40 minutes.
[door opens]
JANINE DE LUCA: Doctor Myers, I thought you would be – I thought Sam would be in here.
MAXINE MYERS: No. I have the comms desk booked for this time. Sam’s on a rest break. I’m training a new runner -
JANINE DE LUCA: Is that runner ready to go?
MAXINE MYERS: We’ve only just started training, Janine. Whatever it is, you’ll have to wait for a runner to be assigned to you.
JANINE DE LUCA: But half of them are in the hospital, and it’s not a - there’s a piece of equipment out there, less than a mile away.
MAXINE MYERS: This runner’s not ready for zombie wilderness.
JANINE DE LUCA: I’ve checked the scanner. There are no zoms within a mile of the location. I’d go myself, but you know the Major’s rule: no key personnel to be risked. And I… picked up something on ROFFLENet from New Canton. I think they’re going after it, too.
MAXINE MYERS: What is it?
JANINE DE LUCA: Assault rifle. Seven clips of ammo.
MAXINE MYERS: Well, Runner Five, looks like you’ll be heading out sooner than we expected. You should be perfectly safe, though. No zoms around. And we’ll do your regular training routine, just out in the wilderness. Janine’ll raise the gates for you. Start walking for 10 minutes now. Don’t push yourself too hard. When 10 minutes are up, you’ll nearly be at the drop site. Go, and Godspeed!
MAXINE MYERS: That’s three minutes, Runner Five. You’re doing well.
MAXINE MYERS: Five minutes. You’re halfway!
MAXINE MYERS: Eight minutes done. Nearly there!
MAXINE MYERS: That’s your 10 minutes. Now I’m going to give you the walk/run drills. When I say run, run slowly. Don’t try to go at a fast pace. You’re going to be running for 15 seconds and then walking for 1 minute, ten times. I’ll tell you when to run.
MAXINE MYERS: Okay, run! Slow running, remember?
MAXINE MYERS: Now slow down to a walk.
MAXINE MYERS: You’re doing great! Now run.
MAXINE MYERS: It wasn’t a zombie, but one day it will be. Walk now.
MAXINE MYERS: Time for another quick run. Run!
MAXINE MYERS: Now walk and get your breath back.
MAXINE MYERS: More running. You can do it!
MAXINE MYERS: That’s great! Stop running and walk.
MAXINE MYERS: The scanner’s still clear. You’re good to continue drills. Run!
MAXINE MYERS: And slow down to a walk. You should be at the pickup site now. Look for the assault rifle in the long grass.
MAXINE MYERS: That’s great, Runner Five! Now speed up to a run. You’re heading home.
MAXINE MYERS: Slow down again to a walk.
MAXINE MYERS: Time to go. Run!
MAXINE MYERS: And slow down again to a walk. Just three more drills to go!
MAXINE MYERS: Time for another quick run. Go!
MAXINE MYERS: That’s good work, Runner Five! Slow to a walk.
MAXINE MYERS: Nearly there. Run!
MAXINE MYERS: Only one more run to go now, Five! Slow down to a walk now.
MAXINE MYERS: Last one. Give it what you’ve got. Run!
MAXINE MYERS: That’s excellent work, Runner Five. I’m checking the scanner, and you’re… oh. Okay, you’re getting near to home. It’s time for your 10-minute free-form run. Again, it’s up to you how much you run or walk. You can walk it all, run it all, or swap between walking and running. There’s a single zombie following you, but it’s just a shambler. If you keep up a brisk pace, you’ll be fine. Just don’t stop! He’s behind you.
[zombie moans]
MAXINE MYERS: That’s great! You’ve done three minutes. Still staying ahead of that zom.
[zombies moans]
MAXINE MYERS: Halfway there. Five minutes to go. You’re getting close.
[zombie moans]
MAXINE MYERS: Just two minutes to go now. Keep going. That zom’s still behind you.
[zombie moans]
[gate siren, gates raise]
MAXINE MYERS: Okay, Runner Five, welcome back to Abel! Cool down now and stretch out your muscles. That was great work! Very -
JANINE DE LUCA: I don’t know what you’re talking about. This runner’s perfectly capable!
MAXINE MYERS: I try not to expose people to unnecessary danger.
JANINE DE LUCA: What’s more dangerous, a few zoms, or New Canton getting hold of more ammunition? Anyway. Runner Five, a small token of the appreciation of the armoury division for your hard work today.
MAXINE MYERS: Is that blood on the -? Okay. You know what? I don’t need to know. Great work today, Five. Take a day off running now, and we’ll see you back here day after tomorrow for a brand new workout.
