Plot[]

10 minute walk[]

Doctor Myers says she's glad to have you on board. Sam makes reference to a group of runners who are out of action through smoke inhalation. This means they need you to train up as a runner.

Rajit's Novel[]

Doctor Myers congratulates you on your first training session. Sam is proud to have swung a hot shower for Runner 5. Doctor Myers figures out that Sam has agreed to read Rajit, Abel's commissary's terrible novel. Sam then passes the novel on to you, as a "reward".

Transcript[]

MAXINE MYERS: Runner Five, we’re glad to have you! We need all the help we can get here at Abel.

SAM YAO: Especially after the, uh – oh, can I mention the, uh -?

MAXINE MYERS: Yeah, Sam. Well, there’s no point in concealing it. We made a mistake. We sent some runners into the old warehouse for supplies. They got trapped by zoms we should have spotted. The runners ended up setting the whole place on fire to escape. It was smart, but quite a lot of our runners are out of action from smoke inhalation. And as you want to get faster -

SAM YAO: We need everyone to be as fast as possible.

MAXINE MYERS: - yeah, we’re here to train you! So, if you’re ready, we’re going to start with a 10-minute walk, just around the rec yard. Walk briskly so that you’re a little bit out of breath, but don’t push yourself too hard. I’ll let you know when ten minutes are up, and what to do next.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s three minutes gone. You’re doing well!

MAXINE MYERS: Five minutes. You’re halfway. Five minutes to go.

MAXINE MYERS: Eight minutes done. Nearly there.

MAXINE MYERS: And that’s your 10 minutes up. Now, I’m going to give you some walk/run drills, okay? So when I say run, I want you to run slowly. Don’t use up all your energy. Do a slow, steady run until I tell you to walk again. You’re going to be running for 15 seconds and then walking for 1 minute, ten times. So just walk for now. I’ll tell you when to run.

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, now run! Slow running, remember.

MAXINE MYERS: Now walk until I tell you to run again.

MAXINE MYERS: Now run again.

MAXINE MYERS: Now walk. You’re doing great!

MAXINE MYERS: Time for another quick run. Run now!

MAXINE MYERS: Now walk and get your breath back.

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, more running! You can do it.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s great! Stop running and walk.

MAXINE MYERS: Imagine a zom’s after you – [imitates zombie moan] and run!

MAXINE MYERS: And slow to a walk. You’re halfway through those drills. You’re doing great!

MAXINE MYERS: Now speed up to a run.

MAXINE MYERS: Slow down again to a walk, Runner Five.

MAXINE MYERS: Time to go! Run!

MAXINE MYERS: And slow down again to a walk. Just three more running drills to go.

MAXINE MYERS: Time for another quick run! Go!

MAXINE MYERS: That’s good work, Runner Five! Slow to a walk.

MAXINE MYERS: Nearly there… run!

MAXINE MYERS: Only one more run to go now, Five. Slow down to a walk now.

MAXINE MYERS: Last one, give it what you’ve got… run!

MAXINE MYERS: That is excellent work, Runner Five. Before you know it, you’ll be doing much more than just these drills.

MAXINE MYERS: Last training exercise for today, Five. I want you to take a 10-minute free-form run. That means it’s up to you how much you run or walk. Listen to your body. If you’re exhausted already, just walk. If you’ve got more gas in the tank, just try some short runs. Don’t push yourself too hard. We’ve got many more of these sessions to go. So, 10-minute free-form. Go.

MAXINE MYERS: That’s great! You’ve done three minutes.

MAXINE MYERS: Halfway there. Five minutes to go.

MAXINE MYERS: Just two minutes to go, now! Keep going.

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, Runner Five, you’re done for the day! Take a few minutes now to cool down and stretch out those muscles while we chat, and then it’s time to hit the showers. We’ve got a shower for Runner Five, right, Sam?

SAM YAO: [laughs] I’ve managed to swing a hot shower today.

MAXINE MYERS: [laughs] How did you do that?

SAM YAO: Well, I’m not entirely without influence at this base, you know. And uh, Rajit was open to a little persuasion…

MAXINE MYERS: You’re going to read his novel, aren’t you?

SAM YAO: I suffer to keep this base going.

MAXINE MYERS: [laughs] And we are all very grateful. Um, that was good work today, Runner Five. We’ll make you a great asset to Abel. Now go and take your shower before Rajit changes his mind.

SAM YAO: Oh, no, but wait. Weren’t you going to, um -?

MAXINE MYERS: Uh? [laughs] Oh yeah! Um, Runner Five, you’ve taken on this training program which is going to make you much more valuable to the base, so the base wants to thank you, and there’ll be a little something for you every time you finish a mission. This time, it’s… what is it?

SAM YAO: It’s, uh… well…

MAXINE MYERS: No.

SAM YAO: Well, a little, um, reading material…

MAXINE MYERS: [sighs] Well, I guess it’s better than nothing. Take a day off running now, Five. We’ll see you back here day after tomorrow.

Letter[]

Five,

That was a great start to your training today, and I can just tell you’re going to fit right in here. Just remember to take your rest day! I’ll be able to tell, believe me.

Also, listen. Life in Abel can get boring. There isn't a lot of reading material after the boxes from the library got flooded. But if Rajit offers to let you read his novel... ah, well, you'll see.
