ROFFLENet is a system developed as an attempt to rebuild the internet using low-tech equipment. ROFFLENet stands for Radio-Operated Free-Form Link-layer Emergency Network. As the network recovery effort advocates using readily-available technology, transfer speeds are very slow, but the priority is on restoring everyone's ability to connect to each other. The ROFFLENet uses radio waves to transmit information.
ROFFLENet stations have been set up across the country using old transmission stations. They are powered by solar or wind generators. Some of them are protected by fences, barbed wire, or even landmines.[1]
While pictures and videos cannot be transmitted, ROFFLENet allows sending and receiving emails and viewing text-based sites like Wikipedia and the Survivor's Bible.[2]
For unknown reasons, Finland is a ROFFLENet black zone. Sara Smith theorizes that either everyone there is dead or they're using something much more sophisticated.[3]
