Maxine Myers is the primary doctor at Abel Township. She is in a relationship with Paula Cohen.
History[]
Pre-apocalypse[]
When Maxine was younger, her parents had a dog named Buddy. Even after Maxine had moved out, Buddy would always come and greet her when she visited.[1]
Maxine met Paula in the United States, when Paula was working for Pandora Haze in Chicago. They did not get along at first. Maxine thought Paula was aggressive and pushy, and Paula thought Maxine was acting dumb and obstructive. But eventually they came to care for each other.[2] When Paula's work took her back to the UK, Maxine went with her.[1]
Paula got Maxine interested in tabletop roleplaying games, specifically Demons and Darkness. In one of their campaigns, Paula's character was infected with a magical parasite in her spine and Maxine's character had to sacrifice a goat to the god Loki to save her.[3]
As a research doctor, Maxine spent half her time as a consultant at St. Clare's, a hospital near Abel Township, and the other half doing research in genetics.
Paula would occasionally tell Maxine things about her work that she wasn't supposed to, such as the code to open the doors of the building. Maxine would sometimes sneak in when Paula was working late.[1]
Paula got invited to a cocktail party at the home of Professor Van Ark and brought Maxine along as her guest. Maxine perceived Van Ark as quiet, hard-working, really dedicated, and very ambitious, although she also heard that he had quite a temper.[4]
Maxine did not want children, but Paula did. This led to them having a row. Paula accused Maxine of being selfish, saying that she would be a great mom.[5]
Maxine and Paula sat watching the first outbreak on the news together. Paula was crying and holding on to Maxine, leading Maxine to wonder if Paula knew more about what was going on than she had said.[1]
Early Apocalypse[]
Maxine was working nonstop emergency shifts at the hospital during the first outbreak. She started off trying to cure people, then just trying to sedate them, until eventually she had to resort to euthanising infected people via morphine overdoses. Paula mentioned the possibility of a vaccine, but there just wasn't any time to synthesize and test it.[6]
Maxine sends a runner, Alice Dempsey, to Robinson Hospital to look for a CDC file that may hold important information about the zombie virus. Alice is unable to find the file and ends up bitten and turned into a zombie.[7]
5K Training[]
After a supply copter from Mullins Military Base is shot down, Maxine asks the survivor to head for Robinson Hospital to pick up some medical kits. Maxine warns them that they might not be allowed into Abel if they can't find any. The survivor - who Sam has decided to call Runner Five - manages to find the CDC file in the hospital, but ends up being chased by the zombified Alice. Maxine watches with Sam as zombie Alice is shot by Abel's snipers, allowing the new Five to enter the Township safely.[7]
Maxine takes charge of Runner Five's training.[8]
Maxine is surprised when Rajit says that the dorms are running low on sheets and blankets. She's been requisitioning some as bandages recently, but there should still be plenty left.[9]
Sam joins Five on a training session just outside of Abel. Maxine is worried about him, especially when Sam runs off suddenly. She tells Five to run after him. After they both return to Abel, Maxine scolds Sam for his behavior. He explains that he was looking for Alice's wallet that has pictures of her family in it - and he found it. Maxine's anger turns to sympathy, and she tells Sam that he can always talk to her.[10]
Maxine joins Five on their penultimate training run. She thanks Five for everything they're doing to help Sam. She also warns them that something seems to be going on with Abel; they've been getting a lot of outside attention lately.[11]
Season One[]
Maxine puts out a request on Radio Abel's "Z-Bay" segment, offering clean socks in exchange for help around the hospital.[12]
Maxine is ready to start investigating that CDC box that Five brought back, but she needs a confocal microscope first. She sends Five out to the university where Paula was working. Five finds a box labelled "Doctor Maxine Myers" and "VS-72". From what Paula told her, Maxine thinks whatever's in that box could be the start of a vaccine for the zombie plague.[6]
Sam arranges for Maxine to use the comms shack alone - well, mostly alone. Five's out on a "supply run" as an excuse. Maxine and Five listen to the CD that Paula left behind. Paula explains how she and the other researchers were working on an experimental drug called VS-72 that was supposed to help people heal faster by increasing cell regeneration. One of the patients in the clinical trial, Patient 29, had an adverse reaction and became the first zombie. Paula urges Maxine to find the research notes in order to understand how and why this happened, and possibly work towards a vaccine for the virus. Paula ends her message by repeating "I love you" over and over, causing Maxine to break down sobbing. Sam walks back in. When he sees Maxine crying he offers to leave her alone again, but she tells him to stay as she plays the CD again.[13]
Maxine sends Five to the Tessandori Street Research Facility to find the files about VS-72. She voices her regret that she has to put Five in danger instead of going herself, but as Abel's only doctor the Major has forbidden her from putting herself at risk. Five finds the clinical trial patient records and brings them back to Abel.[1]
Maxine looks through the patient files and discovers that Patient 29's file is missing. She listens to Paula's CD again. She leaves it playing after the message ends, and after about 15 minutes of silence she discovers another message from Paula. Paula tells Maxine that she found one of the researchers destroying his notes on the orders of Professor Van Ark. Paula realized that this means the notes at the Tessandori lab were probably destroyed as well, since that's Van Ark's personal lab. Paula urges Maxine to search the Keeley Centre, which was operated by the government employees who were working with Pandora Haze.[14]
Maxine sends Five to the Keeley Centre. Five finds the files of Patient 29, real name Arthur Gurkhan. Sam and Maxine warn Five of a helicopter approaching, marked with Pandora Haze logos. Five escapes the building as several people emerge from the helicopter, including Professor Van Ark.[14]
While Five is out on a supply run for "fun stuff", Maxine spots a Demons and Darkness rulebook through their headcam and urges them to grab it. Sam chimes in and requests figurines to go with the game and then both Sam and Maxine tell Five to grab some paints for the figurines. Five brings it all back to Abel and Maxine begins setting up a Demons and Darkness campaign with Sam, Five, Jack, Eugene, and possibly Jody as the players.[3]
Maxine's first session for her Demons and Darkness campaign goes well, so she writes another session for the players.[15]
Jack and Eugene record a segment for Radio Abel asking the residents various questions. When they ask Maxine what she is thankful for, she says she's thankful to be able to help others. Even if she doesn't always have the supplies she needs, she makes sure no one experiences unnecessary suffering.[16] When they ask what her hopes for the future are, Maxine says she would like to go back to America and visit her home and loved ones again.[17]
Maxine tends to Eugene after he ends up in the hospital with food poisoning from some spoiled Spam.[18]
Sara Smith takes Maxine down into the armoury and gives her an ultraviolet scope, which she uses to sees past the black marker redactions on Patient 29's files. Maxine learns that Arthur Gurkhan had worked at Simpson's Corner Shop, so she sends Sara and Five to check it out. Before they get there, a helicopter flies by and destroys the building. Upon examining the burning remains, Sara reports that the corner shop was more than just a corner shop - it had a fully functional industrial lab in the basement.[19]
Maxine sends Five and Sara to Van Ark's house to try and figure out where he is and what he's been doing. They actually find Van Ark himself there, who claims that he had been held captive by Pandora Haze in order to develop a vaccine for them. Maxine asks him why he ordered the researchers at the university to destroy their notes, and he says it was because he was afraid and ashamed that patient zero came from his own medical trial. Van Ark invites Maxine to join him at the Jeffro Complex to help with his research into the zombie virus, but before the conversation can continue Van Ark is bitten by a surprise zombie. Sara dispatches the zombie and she, Five, and Van Ark flee the area. Van Ark begins coughing and offers to lead the remaining zombies away before he turns. He tells Maxine that the researchers at the Jeffro Complex are very close to developing a vaccine, and also that he saw Paula there - still alive. Van Ark then runs off toward the horde, his last words leaving Maxine determined to travel to the Jeffro Complex.[4]
Maxine, Five, and Eight head back to Hertston to investigate the remains of the Simpson's Corner Shop. There they meet a man named Ephraim Whately who has been listening to New Canton's radio transmissions. He pulls out his radio to demonstrate and they all hear Nadia saying that a large number of New Canton's troops are headed for the Jeffro Complex. After failing to find anything conclusive at the corner shop, the group decides to head for Jeffro, accompanied by Ephraim. He helps them sneak into the facility, only to lead them directly into a trap - one set by Professor Van Ark, who is still alive with a healed bite wound on his arm. Sara sets off a flashbang as a distraction, allowing her, Five, and Maxine to sneak away. They hear Paula's voice, but it's only a recording. Van Ark and his soldiers corner them again, but a series of explosions gives them the chance to get away. They meet Archie Jensen and New Canton Runner Five, who had set off the explosions to help them out. Archie says Van Ark got away, but mentions she used to work with Van Ark a long time ago. She asks them if they know someone named "Paula".[20][21]
Season Two[]
Major de Santa brings back information from Mullins Military Base about their work in modifying the effects of the zombie virus. Maxine combines this information with the existing research into a vaccine to create an anti-zombie formula. She sends Runners Three, Four, and Five out to test it by having them drop formula-coated caltrops on the ground and luring zombies to tread on them. They discover that the formula slows down fast zombies, but only temporarily.[22]
Maxine discovers that urea can slow down the progression of the zombie virus, although it cannot stop it entirely.[23]
Maxine continues refining her anti-zombie formula. She uses some spray nozzles that Runner Five found to create an aerosol-type delivery system, although she does have to dilute the formula significantly. When Abel's delegates for the New Canton/Abel peace summit are threatened by fast zombies, Maxine heads out into the field to give her anti-zombie spray to Five and Three. They have to get dangerously close to the zombies to use it, but the spray does indeed slow down the fast zombies.[24]
Sam tries to get Maxine to talk about her feelings in regards to Paula working with Van Ark, but Maxine doesn't want to. Sam tells her that he'll be there when she is ready to talk, which Maxine seems to appreciate.[5]
Maxine sends Five and Sara out to meet up with Archie and Jamie so that they can test out the effects of dog whistles on zombies. Five finds a pattern that causes all the zombies to follow after them, and Archie and Jamie find a pattern that causes the zombies to start picking up and throwing rocks. Maxine speculates that this might be related to how the zombies that attacked Abel were able to operate a rocket launcher.[25]
In the Abel Township Games, Maxine competes in a contest to see who can wear the most sports bras at once. She is disqualified when she has to tap out after putting on her nineteenth.[26]
Maxine still regularly plays Demons and Darkness with her friend group, including Jack and Eugene. At one point Jack's character is trapped in a spiked pit and bleeding to death, but Maxine's character has an invisibility spell they can use to sneak past the guards and save him.[27]
Maxine and Sam get drunk together one night and sneak into Jack and Eugene's radio booth. When they notice the microphone is still on, they decide to have some fun with it. Sam does a pretty good imitation of Eugene's voice, while Maxine's impression of Jack leaves much to be desired. Jack then walks back into the booth and shoos them off, and they run out, laughing.[28]
After spending some time examing the serial numbers on the tone-producing device that Runner Five found several months ago, Maxine determines that it came from an electronics plants. She suspects that Van Ark may have a base there. Runner Five and Archie are send out there to investigate it. Archie finds valuable information about how the zombie control tones work, but in the process she is captured by Van Ark. Maxine realizes that Van Ark wanted her from the start, as her mind is valuable to him.[29]
Sam comes to get Maxine when Runner Five and Jamie finally locate where Van Ark is holding Archie - because Paula is there too. Maxine listens to the conversations and starts to get excited at the thought that they could rescue both Archie and Paula. Janine insists that the runners wait a little longer in order to go along with the plan. But as Van Ark tortures Archie, Jamie becomes more and more agitated, until finally Maxine encourages him to go ahead and rescue her, knowing that it means Van Ark and Paula will leave in the chopper. After Jamie blows up a wall of the building, Van Ark and Paula do leave - but not before Van Ark shoots and kills Archie.[30]
After learning that Van Ark is sending an army of fast zombies towards Abel Township, Maxine rushes to create enough anti-zombie spray for the runners to use as a defense. Unfortunately, she doesn't have enough time to test this batch and it has some unexpected side effects - namely, it makes the fast zombies faster, resulting in the death of Runner Seventeen. Eventually, though, the spray has another effect: the zombies begin dying. Maxine is shocked by this, as it means her formula is getting closer and closer to becoming an effective weapon against the zombies.[31]
Some time later, Maxine rushes out to meet Jamie, who is bringing Carena in with a suspected asthma attack. After examining her, Maxine determines that it's actually a severe allergic reaction. After ruling out food as a cause, Simon correctly guesses that it was due to the anti-zombie spray they were testing. Suddenly Major de Santa comes into the comms shack, ordering Sam to switch to a secure channel. She says that she suspected the spray might have side effects on children, and orders everyone to stay quiet about this or face the consequences.[32]
In the hopes of figuring out why it harms children and how to prevent it, Maxine takes all the runners out of Abel to test the anti-zombie spray in areas with no children. When she hears that bandits are attacking Abel and demanding the anti-zombie spray, she rushes back home, meeting up with reinforcements from New Canton along the way. Runner Five and Simon manage to prevent the bandits from getting away with any of the spray itself, but Maxine notices that some of the notes are missing from her lab.[33]
Maxine is convinced that Jody and Owen are secretly in love with each other because of how much they argue, so she comes up with an excuse to send them out on a mission together. Sam is skeptical of this plan, considering how they seem to genuinely hate each other, but Maxine insists you can't feel that strongly about someone without caring for them. They finish the mission arguing even more than when they started.[34]
Maxine recognizes her and Paula's old postcode at the end of several ROFFLENet messages and believes it to be a message sent by Paula. Maxine tricks Sam so that she can slip out of Abel and accompany Runner Five on a run to investigate the messages, which include coordinates leading a church. At the church they find Paula, who is very confused when Maxine mentions the messages. She didn't send them. Van Ark suddenly appears, revealing that it was a trap he set for Maxine. She, Paula, and Runner Five try to escape through the church catacombs, but Van Ark's soldiers surround the area. The three of them split up to try and escape. Van Ark catches Maxine, but Five runs to help and stabs him in the neck. To everyone's shock, Van Ark is not killed by this, and they watch his gaping neck wound heal before their eyes. Maxine and Five split up again; Maxine gets away, but Five does not.[35]
Maxine tells Paula about how the anti-zombie spray harms children, and Paula tells her that she has something back in Van Ark's labs that might help Maxine fix that. Paula decides to return to Van Ark to help Runner Five escape. Maxine gives Paula her headset to give to Five. Paula gives Five the headset, as well as the vials and notes that Maxine needs to fix her formula.[36]
While helping prisoners in a nearby prison, Maxine reconnects with her first girlfriend, Louise Bailey. The two met at a "scared straight" camp when they were teenagers. Maxine realized she was gay as soon as she met Louise.
Maxine later develops a serum that slows Van Ark's healing capabilities, rendering him vulnerable to physical attack. This allows him to be killed by Runner 5's rocket launcher.
Maxine and Paula are finally reunited after Van Ark's death, but it only lasts a few hours. During a party to celebrate Van Ark's defeat, a strange tone sounds, and Maxine and several other members of Abel Township leave as if in a trance.
Season Three[]
Maxine is missing for the first several episodes of season 3. While Maxine is missing, Paula reveals that Maxine was apprehensive about dating a bisexual woman but eventually came around. The two reflect that Maxine was frequently in trouble when she was younger. As an adult, Maxine is a risk taker except when it comes to relationships and her feelings.
When Runner 5 and Paula finally discover her in stasis on the Laetitia Greenwald, Maxine insists that she's been mind-controlled and can't be trusted to return to Abel. However, she later changes her mind and escapes with Paula and Runner 5.
Maxine joins Runner 5 at Comansys headquarters at the end of season 3. As she and 5 are escaping the collapsing building, she tells Paula that she's ready to start a family with her. They agree to use Sam as a donor.
Season Four[]
Maxine is seven months pregnant when season 4 opens. With Janine's help, she gives birth to baby Sara Myers-Cohen-Yao in an overturned van outside Abel. She stays close to Abel following the birth of her daughter, but she does venture out in the season finale.
Upon learning that The Minister intended to vivisect baby Sara, Maxine states that she's going to kill Sigrid the first chance she gets.
While in the sea caves, Maxine tries to convince Veronica that The Minister is evil. Although Veronica agrees that The Minister has done everything Maxine says, she still shoots Maxine in the arm to escape with Sigrid. Maxine then delivers a rallying speech to Sam, Janine, and Runner 5 as they prepare to return to Abel to defend it.

Personality[]
To have a Doctor in a camp is a blessing. To have one who is experienced, calm and kind is something else entirely.
Maxine is a calm, laid-back person who is quite knowledgeable about medical matters, but can get a bit flustered on the rare occasions that she accompanies Runner Five out on missions when things go awry.
Maxine has a geeky side, although she doesn't display it as often as Sam does. She is a huge fan of Demons and Darkness and often hosts game sessions for the residents of Abel.
Maxine is a bit of a romantic and enjoys trying to play matchmaker, although sometimes her ideas about who would make a good couple are wrong.[37][38][39]
Maxine is sometimes frustrated by the fact that, as Abel's primary doctor, she is rarely allowed outside of the gates.
Relationships[]
Paula Cohen[]
Maxine and Paula are in love. They started dating long before the apocalypse began and have remained faithful to each other ever since. They were separated at the start of the apocalypse and spent much of their time trying to reunite.
Paula and Maxine occasionally argue, as all couples do, but they never allow their arguments to fester and they are quick to make up with each other.
Sam Yao[]
Maxine and Sam are close friends. They get along very well and have bonded over their shared love of Demons and Darkness. Maxine has stated that if she was ever going to be attracted to a man, it would be Sam. Which is why Maxine asked Sam to help her and Paula have a baby. The three of them have been happily raising baby Sara together ever since.
Runner Five[]
Maxine and Runner Five are good friends. Maxine was one of the first people that Five met at Abel Township and she has come to rely on their skills and discretion whenever she has a task or errand that Janine (or Sam) would not approve of. Maxine always invites Five to join her Demons and Darkness campaigns. Maxine has stated that she considers Five to be family.
Janine de Luca[]
Maxine and Janine have a mutual respect for each other, although they do have their differences.
