"Maghreb Vaccine Run" is the third side mission of Season 9.

Carrying a pack of vital samples to a research centre should be a straightforward job. But the samples are fragile, and there are zombies on your trail.

Takes place between Season 9 Mission 7 and Season 9 Mission 30.

Crew[]

Plot[]

They Do That[]

You're Paramedic Five on a mission with Maxine to deliver samples to a research lab to see if the partial zombie vaccine will work with the strain of the virus in Tunisia. But you need to move quickly. The samples need to be kept cool and unfortunately you had to abandon your jeep due to zombies. Rae, your guide, says that she knows the area well, which is lucky because the zombies are after you. Run!

Do You Trust Me?[]

You make it to the top of an aqueduct and get a look at the terrain. Rae knows some shortcuts, but they'll be more dangerous. With only an hour before the samples denature, you don't have much choice.

Proper Preservation of Antiquities[]

You enter an old fort and Maxine marvels at the setup. Rae says that they made good defensive settlements during the start of the apocalypse and asks about what people did in the UK. Maxine says that most homes weren't strong enough to withstand zombie attack and this surprises Rae. She's heard that the UK started the apocalypse and has suffered five or six serious coups and attacks since then. Have you thought about sending your antiquities, such as priceless paintings or Viking artefacts, to somewhere more stable, like Maghreb, where they can really be looked after? Rae knows a few buyers. The conversation is interrupted by a large and loud zombie. Better try another turning!

That's a Bomb[]

The zombie is still after you and Rae asks if you've noticed that Red Scorpion soldier zombies are always large and strong. A headshot won't take it out and it has body armour. And also what looks like a bomb strapped to it!

In Position[]

Rae thinks you have another few minutes before the bomb explodes. Maxine worries that even if you don't get killed in the explosion, you're likely to get infected by flying zombie parts. Rae says that she and Maxine will keep running so the zombie follows them, while you need to keep the samples safe. You also need to get in position on the bridge above the road for when they pass under it. Ready?

Three Minutes[]

Rae and Maxine are past the bridge and Rae instructs you to push a boulder onto the zombie. You almost hit it, but it stumbles to the other side of the bridge. Another boulder manages to trap it, but the bomb is still counting down. Go!

Valuable Assets[]

You watch the explosion from afar and Rae critiques your zombie killing skills. She says she used to work for Amelia and Valmont when they visited long before the apocalypse. Amelia said Rae should get to know Maxine and keep tabs on her. Maxine is oddly touched, and after all, Amelia wants to protect her assets. The research centre is up ahead, so get going. Maxine needs to work on the vaccine.

Transcript[]

[zombies growl]

MAXINE MYERS: Paramedic Five, over here. Here! In this niche in the aqueduct. Climb up. Here, give the refrigerated pack to Rae and take my hand.

RAE: Okay, I have the sample vials, Paramedic Five. Don’t you dare look around. There’s a zombie with a pickaxe right behind you. You gotta climb. I’m serious, climb!

MAXINE MYERS: Okay, good. We’re safe for now. They can’t reach us here, and the serum samples are safe.

RAE: Right. We’re safe for sure, but big picture, the sun’s gonna come up, the refrigeration in this pack will stop working, the samples will all be spoiled, and then what did we even come out here for?

I mean, you came all the way from England, and you said you got this like, partial zombie cure over there. And we said cool, let’s see if it works with our strain of the virus. And you said, I’ll need to take blood samples from your local zoms. And you know, our people have been collecting samples, which is for definite pretty dangerous. And now, a few rays of sun, a slower pace, and it all will have been for nothing

MAXINE MYERS: Did anyone ever tell you that you can be kind of a negative energy, Rae?

RAE: Oh, all the time, dude. Gum? Paramedic Five, gum?

MAXINE MYERS: No, no thanks. Okay, our direct route along the river is blocked by the zombies.

RAE: Yeah. Bummer about those zoms. I’d have thought their government would have checked this whole region out with drones and stuff.

MAXINE MYERS: Well, they didn’t spot the zoms that were lying facedown in the water. Well, until we woke them up with our Jeep.

RAE: Ah, for sure. Things happen, mistakes get made, Jeeps get swarmed by zoms and have to be abandoned. Anyway, you know, I’m here. I know this whole area like geckos know walls.

MAXINE MYERS: Like geckos know walls?

RAE: What? It’s a saying. Come on, we’re gonna have to go the long way around. Climb up the path to the right and onto the aqueduct. Oh yeah, those zombies are climbing after us. They do that around here. Run!

~

MAXINE MYERS: Ah, we really have come out on top of the aqueduct! That is actually really impressive. Oh wow, the river looks so blue from up here.

RAE: You didn’t really believe I knew my way, did you?

MAXINE MYERS: Well, this thing with leading us right to a zombie horde…

RAE: We’re in an apocalypse, dude. Zombies happen. Just gotta think on your feet.

MAXINE MYERS: Yeah, I’m impressed.

RAE: Hey, listen. To you, I might just be a gum-smacking slacker, but I’m actually a sought-after guide and fixer in this region.

MAXINE: Okay then. Listen, we have less than an hour before our blood samples denature. Me and Paramedic Five have to get them to the research lab in Cantara City before that happens.

RAE: There are shortcuts we can take. It’s going to be dangerous, but we can get there before the sun’s high in the sky. You trust me?

MAXINE MYERS: Actually, yeah.

RAE: Then let’s do this. Down the sand road towards the fort. Run!

~

MAXINE MYERS: This fort is incredible. It’s built from the same sandstone, but there’s slanted windows tunneled into them. Are those mirrors in the windows?

RAE: Yeah. They let the air in and reflect the light into the ruins, but keep the sand out. They were good defensive settlements early in the outbreak. Do you have stuff like that in the UK, Dr. Myers? You are from the UK, right?

MAXINE MYERS: Well, the uh, the US originally, but uh, the UK for a while, yeah. And uh, no. No, we-we don’t have anything like this. Most homes weren’t strong enough to withstand the zombie attacks.

RAE: Huh.

MAXINE MYERS: What?

RAE: Well, I mean… the UK. But we hear things. You’ve heard things, right, Paramedic Five?

MAXINE MYERS: Things?

RAE: Didn’t you guys like, start the apocalypse? And then you’ve had like, another three or like, five kind of serious coups and regime changes since? You’re… a bit of a dangerous and unstable region?

MAXINE MYERS: Hey, that’s not… Um, well, hmm. Yep. Yep. I-I guess we have gone through a few different governments lately.

RAE: Yeah, it’s nothing to be ashamed about, dude. Not everywhere can be as stable as the Maghreb. Gum?

MAXINE MYERS: Uh, no. No, no thank you.

RAE: You know, I heard your British museum got taken over by some like, paramilitary people.

MAXINE MYERS: Yeah, yeah. I think that was um, Colonel Sage’s people? Or um… oh no, or was it Sigrid’s? Oh God, it’s all blurred.

RAE: We need to head down this alleyway.

MAXINE MYERS: Wow! God, this is narrow. It has sandstone buildings on either side. They’re crumbling.

RAE: Yeah. They’re built well, though. This stuff never collapses. So you British ever thought maybe you should send your antiquities somewhere they can be really looked after?

MAXINE MYERS: [laughs] I mean, I’m not really in charge of, uh -

RAE: I only ask because I could find some buyers in the Maghreb. Turner watercolors, Sutton Hoo Viking artifacts? We would snap those up.

MAXINE MYERS: I don’t have any of those.

RAE: Oh. Okay. Well, you know, bear it in mind if you come across any. Just down this side turning.

MAXINE MYERS: Yeah, well, you know. I guess uh, you do never know what you might find. [zombie growls, MAXINE shudders] Zombie!

RAE: Oh okay, okay. Uh, my bad. Uh, next left. Run!

~

[zombie growls]

MAXINE MYERS: Wow, that zom is not slowing down. Are you okay, Five? Pack not too heavy?

RAE: Yeah, you ever notice that the Red Scorpion soldier’s arms are like, super jacked?

MAXINE MYERS: Oh, uh, the uniform?

RAE: Yeah. You get this sometimes. Red Scorpion and the Maghreb were at war, blah blah, and Red Scorpion parachuted soldiers into our territory to spy, blah blah, and some of them got bit and hid and turned zom in out of the way places like this, blah blah blah.

MAXINE MYERS: So we just keep running?

RAE: Yeah. You’ll never be able to take it out with a head shot. Look at the body armor it has on.

MAXINE MYERS: Right. I guess that’s standard?

[device beeps]

RAE: Yeah, totally standard, dude. Just remain chill.

MAXINE MYERS: And the um, the square thing on its chest that’s beeping. Also standard?

RAE: There’s no… wait. Ah, uh, well, okay…

MAXINE MYERS: Standard.

RAE: No. No, that’s a bomb. Five, you take point. We need to run.

~

[device beeps, zombie growls]

MAXINE MYERS: Is it my imagination or is that um, beeping faster now?

RAE: Yeah, I guess my estimate is that we have another eight or nine minutes before it explodes. It must have knocked the timer switch when it started coming after us.

MAXINE MYERS: But we’ll be - if we don’t get exploded - we’ll get splattered in zombie parts and we’ll be infected. And even if I could manufacture some antidote in Cantara City, and even if it actually works with the local virus variant, we wouldn’t be able to get there in time!

RAE: Anyone ever tell you that you can be quite a negative energy, Doctor?

MAXINE MYERS: No, actually. No, I’m a delight.

RAE: [laughs] Well, do not worry. I took an adult ed class in tactical thinking. I have a plan.

MAXINE MYERS: You took an adult ed class? [laughs] Is that supposed to make me feel better?

RAE: Hey, that’s a little judgy. Five, me and Dr. Judgmental here will carry on running along the road. The zom’s gonna follow us. You have the blood samples, so we want to keep you out of its way. But I don’t feel like dying today, so you need to be in position on the bridge above the road when we go under it. You see what I’m saying? Go now, run!

~

[zombie growls, device beeps]

RAE: Okay Five, we’re past the bridge. See those boulders next to you? The zom will keep chasing us. It’s gonna go under the bridge in a moment. Roll one of the boulders onto it.

[rock clatters]

MAXINE MYERS: Oh no!

RAE: Oh, so close, Five, so close! The zom’s stumbling around to the other side of the bridge. Try again on the other side. You’ll get it this time! [rock clatters] Ah yes, that’s it, Five! You’ve trapped it by the leg. The bomb’s going off in like three minutes. You have to get out of there now, go!

~

[explosion]

MAXINE MYERS: Wow, that’s quite the, um, the splatter of zombie parts and rock. Wow, well done, Five!

RAE: Yeah. Your aim wasn’t so great the first time. I mean, that’s just some feedback for you if you want to improve. Good effort.

MAXINE MYERS: I mean, this is not a normal situation for a paramedic to encounter. You did really well.

RAE: There’s always room to improve your game. You know who told me that? Your prime minister.

MAXINE MYERS: Um, Amelia? [laughs] You know Amelia?

RAE: Oh, sure. I used to work for them. You know her and her husband, Brent Valmont? They came here like, way before the apocalypse. He wanted to buy up everywhere they’d ever filmed Star Wars.

MAXINE MYERS: [laughs] That figures.

RAE: You know she’s setting up trade routes between Europe and the Maghreb now? You know, I gotta tell you, I really learned my hustle from her. Anyway, we talked and she said I should try to get to know you.

MAXINE MYERS: So Amelia’s spying on us?

RAE: Yeah, I wouldn’t say spying. Just… keeping tabs.

MAXINE MYERS: You know, that’s um… that’s somehow strangely reassuring. England feels very far away right now. Even Sam and Janine and Peter and Frances are very far away. It’s-it’s nice to know those connections are still there.

RAE: Aw, touching. And you know, you’ll see them again.

MAXINE MYERS: You’re sure?

RAE: Oh yeah. Amelia mentioned how valuable all of you are to her. She’s gonna protect her assets.

MAXINE MYERS: [laughs] Well, all right. Paramedic Five, you have done a great job today. The research center is up ahead. This asset is gonna start working on a vaccine.
