Jody Marsh is Abel Township's Runner 4 and the most senior runner. She may seem timid, but she's got a strong survival instinct and a mean bow-arm. She's one of Abel's most reliable Runners, and her lucky streak has gotten her out of many a sticky situation. Just don't expect her to put on a brave face.
Jody is a keen knitter and is scared of alpacas. She was a banker before the apocalypse.
History[]
Pre-apocalypse[]
Jody has three younger brothers.[1]
Jody loved watching the cartoon Doctor Detector.[1]
Jody got a tattoo of a TV show that she liked.[2]
Jody worked as a banker. She somehow got involved with the Romanian mafia, setting up accounts for them to use for money laundering purposes. She stayed out of their other business though, refusing to learn what they were using the money for, and just accepted the payments they offered her.[3]
Early Apocalypse[]
When Jody was training to be a runner, she was sometimes joined by Alice Dempsey, who wanted to keep her company.[4]
There was a mishap at Jody's birthday party in Abel, involving a "surprise!", a zombie, and "some minor cake-related injuries".[5]
The Way of All Flesh[]
Jody and Chris arrive at Gadsen Manor after fleeing from a horde of zombies. There they meet Keith, Manisha, Callum, Rose, Geri, and Professor Huebner. Another woman, Sheila, is trapped in a treehouse outside. As the group is sitting down to eat and introducing themselves, they hear the manor's doorbell ringing. They go and check but nobody is at the door, only the zombies crowding around the fence. They return to the dining room. Callum begins eating his stew, but suddenly starts choking and collapses. Manisha checks him and confirms that he is dead.[6]
After the intial shock of Callum's death passes, Jody, Rose, Geri, and the Prof move Callum's body out of the way. Then everyone splits up to investigate the manor. Jody, Chris, and Manisha explore the west wing, where Manisha finds a hidden control panel labelled "Property of Pandora Haze". The power light is on but the control panel is unresponsive. The investigations are interrupted when Sheila screams for help from outside. Jody lures the zombies away from the treehouse by ringing a bell, allowing Sheila to climb down. Geri and Keith kill some of the zombies with rifles and both Jody and Sheila make it safely inside the manor. However, the zombies have now breached the fence.[7]
Jody helps to fortify the doors and windows of the building. Afterwards, the groups checks out the laptop that Keith and the Prof found, but it seems like the hard drive has failed. Next they check the voicemails on Callum's cell phone that Geri found. One of the voicemails is from Manisha, in which she calls herself a murderer. Jody and Chris take Manisha to a separate room to talk to her. She insists that she didn't kill Callum and that they were very good friends. She explains how Callum had slept with her wife, but when she confronted him about it he was very honest with her and the two of them bonded over it. During that conversation Callum told her about his sister who was in jail. After reviewing the evidence Chris gathers Jody, Sheila, Rose, Geri, and the Prof in one room. He declares his theory: Rose is Callum's sister, and Rose is the one who killed him.[2]
Rose admits to being Callum's sister but is vague about whether she killed him. Jody pulls Chris aside and asks for his help in convincing the others not to kill Rose. Chris agrees and Jody kisses him on the cheek. They take Rose to another room and continue questioning her. Rose tells them that her dad was an abusive drunk, so she killed him when she was 18. She says that she tracked down Callum after the apocalypse started, but when he didn't acknowledge that they knew each other she was overcome with rage and killed him. Chris doesn't fully believe her story, so he and Jody go to check Callum's body again. Chris comes to a realization: Rose did not track Callum down; Callum told her to meet him at the manor on this day. Rose confirms this, and then Jody realizes something: Callum is the one who killed their father and Rose took the blame to protect her younger brother. Rose confirms this as well. Chris asks Rose if she knows who the real killer is. She says she has an idea but refuses to say who. It's getting late and Chris is getting frustrated, so Jody pulls him away from the interrogation to go to bed.[1]
Rose is found strangled to death the next morning. With the knowledge that a murderer is still among them and with the zombie horde outside growing by the hour, the group decides to search the manor again for any weapons or safe rooms. Jody, Chris, Geri, and Sheila check the boiler room, where they find Rose's scrapbook burned nearly to ash. Keith and Manisha soon join them and report that there should be a secret room behind the storeroom. Keith finds the switch and the wall opens to reveal a control room. Inside are camera feeds from all over the manor and buttons with various functions - including ringing the doorbell. On the screen, they see the Prof outside the fence, leaving. He's somehow found a way out and made it past the horde. On another camera they see that zombies have breached the manor. Sheila hits a button that activates the fire doors and buys them some time. Everyone flees upstairs. Jody and Chris examine the scrapbook. One page at the very beginning had been torn out before the book was burned. Chris tells Jody to gather everyone in the sitting room. He knows who the killer is.[8]
Chris goes over all the evidence and explains his reasoning to everyone. His conclusion: Sheila is the killer. She confesses and explains her reasoning. Sheila wanted revenge against Callum and Rose for the roles they played in the death of her daughter, Billie. Callum had written an article mistakenly blaming Billie for an accident that caused the deaths of thousands, and once in prison Billie was bullied into suicide by Rose and the other inmates. With the murder mystery solved, the group turns to their next problem: the massive zombie horde. Sheila offers herself as a sacrifice. The group lowers her down to the ground floor and Sheila draws the zombies away with a noisemaker, allowing everyone else to slip past. Keith and Manisha leave together. Geri sets off on her own after admitting she's a member of Netrophil. Jody and Chris run back to Abel together.[9]
5K Training[]
Jody goes to meet the new Runner Five during their training. She surprises them by growling like a zombie and shouting "boo!" Jody cheerfully introduces herself as Runner Four, saying that she and Five are kind of like siblings, before leaving Five to finish their training.[5]
Jody joins Five on a training session. She mentions how she's been doing constant supply runs for Rajit and Francesca, noting that everything seems to be running out faster lately.[4]
Jody takes Five to the Creative Craft Warehouse to pick up some yarn. While there, they meet Becca Harrison, who's out collecting supplies for her family. Becca mentions that the guys at Bert Airfield have noticed supplies going missing lately.[10]
Jody knits Five a scarf as congratulations for finishing their runner training.[11]
Season One[]
Jack and Eugene debate who is faster: Jody or Runner Five. Eugene takes Jody's side, citing her speed on a recent decoy run. The two of them ponder asking the runners to race each other.[12]
Jody shows some interest in joining Maxine's Demons and Darkness campaign.[13]
Jack and Eugene record a segment for Radio Abel where they ask Abel's residents various questions. When Jody is asked what she's thankful for, she says she's thankful for everybody at Abel and how they all look after each other.[14] When they ask her weapon of choice, Jody talks about her skill with a bow.[15] When they ask what her hopes are for the future, she says that she wants to spend an entire weekend sitting in front of a fire with the radio on, just knitting.[16]
Jody, Five, and Sara Smith go out on a scouting mission; Jody's first scouting mission, to be precise. It's supposed to be a simple run to check on an area outside of the camera range, but Jody hears some odd musical tones followed by gunshots. They follow the noise and discover a pile of about forty dead zombies, each killed with a single shot to the forehead. Even stranger, there are loaded guns piled up all around them. Sara notes that this is just like something she and Janine have seen before at Jameson Hester Stadium, very early in the apocalypse. Before they can investigate further, a group of twenty zombies appears nearby. The runners gather up as many guns as they can carry and head back towards Abel, but the zombies manage to keep pace with them. In fact, the zombies are running as well. Sam sends out Runners Thirteen and Fourteen to cover them with rifles and everyone makes it safely back into Abel.[17]
As New Canton launches a raid against Abel, Jody heads north to act as a lookout since Sam's cameras are all down. She spots a massive horde of at least three hundred zombies heading towards the township and contacts Abel in a panic to warn them. The message gets through, but Jody's transmission ends suddenly with her screaming.[18]
Jody barely manages to outpace the horde. She meets up with Runner Six and the two of them lead a pack of zoms away from Abel. However, they are ambushed by a group of child zombies from Red Settlement. Jody escapes, but Runner Six is killed by them.[19]
Season Two[]
Jody joins Runners Three and Five on a mission to test out Maxine's anti-zombie formula. Runner Three also brings Runner Seven's dog, Bonnie, with them. As they prepare the test for the anti-zombie formula, Bonnie runs off. Jody reminds Three that Seven gave him a dog whistle; he pulls it out and blows. Bonnie returns to him, but in the process they learn that the fast zombies can be directed with the sound of a dog whistle.[20]
Jody and Runner Seventeen find some sheep while out looking for survivors of the attack on Abel.[21]
Sam sends Jody, Runner Nine, and Runner Thirteen to Birkmyre Estate to rescue the people trapped there by a horde of zombies. Nine and Thirteen lure the zombies away with noisemakers while Jody goes to meet the people as they escape.[22]
Jody is out chopping wood with Runner Five and Simon when Janine radios them to say that there's been a distress call from a beached ship. The three of them head down to the coast and climb aboard the ship, which they discover is absolutely infested with zombies. They end up trapped between two hordes, only to be rescued by someone unexpected: Runner Eight, Sara Smith.[23]
Sara leads Jody and the others to the bridge, where the remaining survivors of the Aurora are waiting. They successfully evacuate the survivors, then return for the supplies still onboard. Jody and Simon head towards the forward compartments and collect a haul of electronics and medicine. Sam warns them that Five and Sara have discovered a fuel leak in the hold, so they quickly get off the ship. When everyone is clear, the captain throws a lit flare onto the deck, causing a fuel explosion that destroys the ship. Jody and the others lead the suvivors back to Abel.[24]
Jody throws an impromptu "Welcome Home and Thanks for Not Being Dead" party to celebrate Sara's return.[24]
Jody participates in the Abel Township Games as a competitor in the "supply collection slalom". She comes in first place, beating out Simon, Roman, and Cameo.[25]
While Jody is out collecting firewood, she is surprised by Runner Eighteen, Justin Miles, running out of the trees covered in mud. Thinking he's a zombie, Jody swings one of the logs at him, but luckily he manages to duck in time. To apologize for this, Jody gives him her laundry ticket for the week.[26]
While Janine leads the other runners through a training mission, Jody and Runner Five act as decoys to lure the zombies away from the area. Unfortunately they also attract a group of fast zombies, but they are rescued by a group of young women and girls who introduce themselves as the North London Girl Guides. Jody and Sam invite them to stay at Abel, but the Girl Guides insist that they can take care of themselves - although they would be happy to trade supplies. One of them, Charlie, tells Jody and Five that they'll be in the area for a while, and if the runners need help all they have to do is whistle.[27]
As Van Ark's army of fast zombies approaches Abel Township, Jody and fourteen other Abel runners head out to meet them, armed with Maxine's anti-zombie spray. Unfortunately, Maxine didn't have time to test this batch and it ends up making the fast zombies faster. Jody briefly panics after Runner Seventeen is killed. Sam tells them to retreat, but then reinforcements arrive from New Canton. In addition, the anti-zombie spray soon takes effect and begins killing the zombies. With the army defeated, Major de Santa gives a triumphant speech.[28]
Jody participates in the memorial service for Runners Five, Six, Ten, and Seventeen in the Forest of Fallen Runners. The ceremony is interrupted by the early arrival of a ship carrying essential fuel, so Jody and the other runners head off to help unload it.[29]
After the fuel drums are loaded on a train headed to Bert Airfield, Jody, Simon, Five, and Sara run alongside it to make sure the tracks are cleared. A horde of zombies appears in front of the train, enough that Sam is worried the train might be derailed if it hits them. The runners split up to lure the zombies away: Jody and Simon go one way, while Five and Sara go the other.[30]
Jody is out testing Maxine's anti-zombie spray when bandits invade Abel. One of the bandits steals all of Jody's wool.[31]
Maxine sends Jody and Owen out on a mission together. Unbeknowst to them, this is Maxine's attempt to act as a matchmaker for them, as she's convinced their constant arguing means that they are secretly in love. She's wrong. They end the mission arguing just as much as when they started, if not more.[32]
Jody helps Ed knit a hat for his daughter Molly.[33]
Jody participates in an archery contest between Abel Township and New Canton.[34]
Jody joins Runner Five, Simon, and Owen on a mission to collect supplies from a shopping centre...while on bicycles. Jody is very unhappy that she ended up with the worst bike; it doesn't even have gears. She becomes annoyed with Simon's frequent comments about how good his own bike is. They make it to the shopping centre and grabs the supplies from a camping store. As they're leaving, one of Simon's tires blows out, to Jody's amusement. Simon hitches a ride with Five and they all make it back out safely.[35]
The following section contains information and/or events that are considered non-canon. [skip section]
Jody dresses up like Runner Five for Halloween, making sure to include several sports bras in her costume. She and Runner Five head out to the nearby apple orchard to pick some for New Canton's trick-or-treaters. While there, they spot a Headless Zombie riding atop a horse and Jody recounts a story one of the New Canton runners told her about such a thing. The Headless Zombie comes at them with a scythe, but Jody and Five manage to distract its horse by dropping their apples, which buys them enough time to get away. On the way back to Abel, Jody mentions that she also heard about an escaped animal from a local zoo: a big cat, which has since become a zombie. They hear a growling sound and decide to get home as quick as they can.
End of non-canon section.
Jody celebrates with the rest of Abel Township after Van Ark is killed. Maxine tries to convince her to dance with Owen, but Jody flatly refuses.[36]
Season Three[]
Jody attend Runner Eight's funeral. The runners take the long way there, which gives them the opportunity to have a private conversation. With Runner Seven gone, Abel no longer has a Head of Runners. They were going to ask Runner Eight, but that's obviously not an option any more. So Jody asks Runner Five if they would like to be Head of Runners. Jody says that although she's been at Abel longer than Five, it's not about length of service. She says it has to be someone everyone trusts and someone who wants the job, which Jody does not. Jody tells Five to think about it - they don't have to answer now.[37]
Jody and Runner Five head out to investigate some "giant footprints". On the way, they are joined by a Girl Guide, Margie Gupta, who wants to interview them for her Jobs badge. Jody reluctantly answers her questions as they run. The "footprints" turn out to be the marks from a construction machine another Girl Guide is using to kill Boy Scout zombies.[38]
Owen invites Jody to a private rendezvous under the guise of investigating some zombie sightings, but Jody realizes he intends for it to be a date, much to her chagrin. She brings Runner Five with her, which saddens Owen, who sends Five to check the perimeter so he and Jody can talk privately. Jody tries to let Owen down gently. While the two are talking, a zombified wedding party converges on the manor. The three runners are rescued by Travis. He explains he is from the Ministry of Recovery and then promptly arrests Jody for the murder of twenty-three people, informing her that she's been tried in absentia and sentenced to death.[39]
Everyone is in disbelief about Travis's announcement. Jody proclaims her innocence as Travis explains that someone in Abel sold information to the Exmoor Militia, who then robbed a convoy of people and left them to face a zombie horde unarmed. He says he has evidence saying that person was Jdoy, but Owen and Sam refuse to believe it. Owen knocks out Travis and tosses Runner Five the keys to unlock Jody's handcuffs. Jody, Owen, and Five flee from the Ministry's pursuit with the help of Sam and make their way to a shopping mall. Travis reveals that Jody was affiliated with the Romanian mob before the apocalypse, setting up fake accounts and laundering money for their illegal activities. Travis plays a video clip of Jody talking with one of the mafia members about the accounts and her payments. The clip ends with her saying, "I don't want to know, just give me the money," which then begins looping. Travis says that the Romanian mob has now become the Exmoor Militia, and that Jody is still working for them. Owen begins to doubt Jody, but she begs for them to trust her. Runner Five leads them towards Dedlock territory, where they run into Simon, who offers his assistance.[3]
Simon gives them shelter for the night. In the early morning, the four of them set out for an abandoned mental hospital where Jody used to meet with the Romanian mob. They expect to find files that will exonerate Jody, but instead they find Amelia Spens burning files in a garbage can fire. Amelia kicks the garbage can at Owen and then flees, making her look very guilty. The runners chase after her, but she shoots Owen in the leg and takes Runner Five hostage as she escapes in a microlight aircraft.[40]
Jody tends to Owen's gunshot wound as the people back at Abel search Amelia's room. They discover that Amelia was selling information to both the Exmoor Militia and Comansys, proving Jody's innocence in the deaths of the convoy.[41]
Although Jody is found innocent of murder, the knowledge that she used to be involved in illegal activities with the mafia is a blow to her reputation back at Abel. Jody was friends with some orphaned teenagers living in Abel, and the news about Jody's past leaves them very upset.[42]
Jody spends a lot of time at Owen's bedside as he's recovering from his injury.[43]
Season Four[]
Jody protects Abel while Janine is delivering baby Sara in the overturned van outside the township. Janine provides tactical guidance to her in between encouraging Maxine. In response to someone's question on the other side, Jody yells, "I don't know why it's on fire! I'm not the mother of dragons!"
Season Five[]
Jody is in prison at Abel at the start of the season. When Five breaks in and gives her a headset, she weeps that she thought she'd never hear Janine's beautiful voice again. Jody later swaps shirts with Paula and takes a fake bundle with her to trick Ian and the guards into believing she's Paula, escaping with baby Sara. Tom saves Jody from being killed for this stunt, and she in turn insists that he come with them. Jody and Tom seem to develop a close friendship throughout the rest of the season. He gifts a crossbow to her, much to Jody's delight. When Five and Tom are alone on the line with Sam, Tom sobs that Jody is "so good. She thinks she isn't, but she is." In "Get The Party Started," Amelia gets distracted from doing her job because Jody is "so attractive" when taking control. Tom comments a moment later, "You really are attractive when you're taking control!" to which Jody seems flattered.

Quotes[]
On her First Run: "My first run was such a disaster. I tripped and fell down a hill, nearly broke my headset and started panicking because I thought Janine was going to kill me. Like, really kill me. She used to scare the life out of me. But it was OK in the end. I actually found an old van full of computers at the bottom of the hill, so she wasn’t too mad. I’m always getting lucky like that, though. Falling over something valuable or accidentally dodging zoms or whatever. Simon - Runner 3 - he calls me Clover. Basically, what I’m saying is, you’ll be fine. Just don’t forget to tie your shoes!"
Personality[]
Jody is generally friendly towards people, although certain individuals such as Owen and Amelia tend to get on her nerves.
Jody seems to struggle with anxiety at times, often becoming nervous and panicky when things start going wrong. Despite this, Jody knows how to take charge when necessary and has shown herself to be a capable leader.
Jody is a little bit bothered by how most of Abel's residents get to stay warm and safe inside the settlement while the runners go out and risk their lives on a daily basis.[44]
Relationships[]
Runner Five[]
Jody and Runner Five are good friends. They are often sent out on missions together.
Jody was friendly towards Runner Five right from the start.[45] She was the one to ask Five to become the new Head of Runners, even though Jody has seniority over them.[37]
Sam Yao[]
Janine de Luca[]
Simon Lauchlan[]
Amelia Spens[]
Jody despises Amelia. Her hatred towards the other woman began when Amelia tried to frame her for selling information to the Exmoor Militia, which nearly resulted in Jody being executed.[41]
Amelia takes great pleasure in antagonizing Jody.
